Bifold Door Lock Repair — Jammed Tracks, Failed Gearboxes & Alignment
Bifold doors are the most engineered doors in the house — and when the lock or a runner fails, most firms simply don’t want to know. Max’s team repairs bifolds across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield: jammed tracks, failed gearboxes, dropped leaves and handles that spin uselessly. The slab and glass are almost never the problem — bifold faults live in the hardware, and hardware is replaceable.

The faults we see on bifolds
Lead-door lock won’t throw
The traffic (lead) door carries a standard multipoint gearbox — and it fails exactly like any uPVC door’s: stiff for weeks, then floppy, then nothing. Pattern gearboxes for the common bifold systems are carried in the van and swapped in one visit.
Door jammed part-open on the track
Usually a seized or shattered runner wheel, sometimes debris in the bottom track. Never force a jammed leaf — the folding hardware multiplies the leverage and something expensive bends. Runners are replaceable; bent hinges cost more.
Handle spins without resistance
Snapped spindle or failed follower in the gearbox. Cheap if caught now; a lockout if left.
Leaves out of line — gaps at top or bottom
Bifolds hang from adjustable carriers, and buildings move. Carrier adjustment brings the leaves back square, restores the seal and — crucially — takes the strain off the locking points before they fail.
Shootbolts won’t seat on the slave leaves
Dropped alignment again, or worn shootbolt keeps. Adjustment first, parts second — the same honest order as everything else we do.
What it costs
Same structure as every Max visit: £85 labour + parts + VAT, agreed before we set off. Gearboxes run £20–£180 by pattern, runners £15–£60 a set, and alignment-only visits are £85 flat. What you’re really paying for is a team that says yes to bifolds — see the French, patio & bifold locks guide for the wider family.
Bifold questions, straight answers
The installer’s gone bust — can you still get parts? Nearly always. Most bifolds use standard gearbox and runner patterns regardless of the brand on the glass.
Are bifolds less secure? A properly adjusted bifold with a healthy multipoint and anti-snap cylinder is as secure as any uPVC door. A dropped one with a straining gearbox isn’t — which is an adjustment away from fixed.
