What’s Your Door Doing? The Nine Classic uPVC Faults

Match the symptom — each card says whether it’s usually an adjustment (the £85 flat visit, no parts) or a part (quoted exactly on the phone).

Golden rule: if the handle needs more force this month than last month, stop and call — the £0-parts adjustment and the £180 gearbox are the same fault, four weeks apart. Inside the Door: Why the Gearbox Decides Everything

A uPVC door locks with a full-height multipoint strip: lift the handle and hooks, rollers and shootbolts throw into keeps in the frame; turn the key and the central gearbox deadlocks the lot. The gearbox is the heart — and the classic failure point, because a misaligned door strains it on every single lift.

Patterns carried in the van

GU/Ferco — the most common in the UK — plus Winkhaus, ERA, Fullex, Fuhr, Maco, Mila, Avocet and Yale patterns. Most gearbox swaps happen in one visit.

Obsolete mechanism? Still fixable

Older patterns (early Ferco/GU, Cego, Fix) are discontinued — the right fix is a full rebuild matched to your existing mechanism: a gearbox-compatible case or a like-for-like strip on the original routing. “Universal” repair locks are the fallback, not the answer — less universal than the box claims and less reliable in most cases, so Max fits one only when it’s genuinely the right call. A dead mechanism almost never means a new door.

Genuine parts, never pattern copies

The market is flooded with cheap copies — thinner metal, smaller springs, shorter lives. Max fits genuine where it’s made, proven equivalents from long-trusted suppliers where it’s not.

The Two-Minute Maintenance Routine

Twice a year: a PTFE dry lubricant along the lock strip, hooks, keeps and hinges — and a dedicated lock lube (never oil) in the cylinder. Classic WD-40 is a penetrant, not a lubricant: it dries tacky and gathers grit. And always lift the handle fully when the door is shut — it holds the slab flat and shares the load across every locking point instead of the latch alone.

uPVC Door Repairs — Your Questions Answered

My uPVC door won’t lock when it’s closed but locks fine open — what is it?

Almost always misalignment: the door has dropped so the hooks and rollers miss their keeps in the frame. It’s a hinge and keep adjustment — the £85 flat visit, usually no parts at all.

The handle has gone floppy — how serious is that?

It’s the handle spring cassette or the gearbox follower. Caught early it’s a cheap fix; ignored, it usually ends as a deadlocked door and a gearbox replacement.

My door is deadlocked shut and won’t open — can you get in without wrecking it?

Non-destructive entry is always the first approach, and many uPVC doors open by manipulating the mechanism. Where drilling is genuinely the only way in, it’s agreed first — and because the failed part is replaced as part of the repair, the finished door shows no trace of it.

Do I need a whole new door if the mechanism has failed?

Almost never. Gearboxes, full strips and cylinders are all replaceable — and even obsolete mechanisms are handled with adaptable repair locks that match the old routing.

How much does a uPVC door repair cost in Nottingham?

£85 labour + parts + VAT, quoted as one final figure before attendance. Adjustment-only visits are £85 flat; gearboxes run £20–£180 in parts, full strips £40–£250, cylinders £25–£120 with anti-snap as standard.

How long does a gearbox replacement take?

Usually 45–60 minutes when the pattern is in the van — and Max carries the common Nottingham patterns (GU/Ferco, Winkhaus, ERA, Fullex, Fuhr, Maco). Realignment is included so the new gearbox isn’t strained like the old one.

Why does my door only stick on hot afternoons?

uPVC expands in heat, and a door already slightly out of line binds against the frame. It eases when cool and comes back every warm day — one adjustment ends the cycle. Never force the handle in the meantime.

What brand of mechanism is in my door — does it matter?

GU/Ferco is the most common in the UK, alongside Winkhaus, ERA, Fullex, Fuhr, Maco, Mila, Avocet and Yale. The brand decides the part price within the £20–£180 gearbox range, not whether it can be fixed.

My mechanism is obsolete — the installer said the door can’t be repaired. True?

Not true. Even when your exact pattern is long discontinued, the mechanism gets rebuilt to match — a gearbox-compatible case or a like-for-like strip that keeps the original routing. “Universal” repair locks exist as a last resort, but they’re less universal than the box claims and less reliable in most cases — Max says so before one goes anywhere near your door. A dead mechanism almost never means a new door.

Do you repair French doors and double doors?

Yes — including the shootbolt systems they use top and bottom, and the alignment quirks of a floating slave leaf. Same £85 + parts structure.

Can I lubricate the lock myself — and is WD-40 okay?

Yes: a PTFE dry lubricant on the strip, hooks, keeps and hinges twice a year. Classic WD-40 isn’t a lubricant — it dries tacky and attracts grit that wears the mechanism.

Is it worth repairing an older uPVC door rather than replacing it?

Usually, yes — a repair is £85 + parts against £1,000+ for a new door fitted. The exceptions are slabs that are physically damaged or frames that have moved; Max will tell you honestly which side of the line yours is on.

Can you upgrade my security during the same repair visit?

Yes — an anti-snap or certified TS007 3★ / SS312 cylinder can be fitted in the same visit, and a second job typically adds about £45 in labour, often nothing.

Do you cover my area — and is the price the same everywhere?

Nottingham (NG1–NG16 and suburbs), Derby and Mansfield — same pricing everywhere, no travel surcharges within the patch.

Do you handle emergencies at night?

24/7. Days, evenings and weekends are the same £85 + parts; overnight call-outs (10pm–6am) start from £95 + VAT, flat — never hourly.

Is the work guaranteed?

Parts carry their manufacturer guarantees and the workmanship is Max’s own — every repair leaves with a 12-month workmanship warranty and maintenance guidance for the door, so it stays sorted. If something isn’t right after a repair, he comes back. That’s how a 600-review reputation stays at 5.0.

The handle is stuck in the up position — what does that mean?

The hooks have thrown but the gearbox won’t release them — a jam, not a disaster. Don’t force it back down; that’s the move that snaps followers. Max frees the mechanism non-destructively and replaces the gearbox in the same visit if it’s given up.

Can you secure my door today if the lock has failed completely?

Yes — same-day across the patch on most days, with gearboxes, cylinders and handles carried in the van. If a part genuinely has to be ordered, the door is left locking securely in the meantime, not held together with hope.

Will home insurance cover my uPVC door repair?

After a break-in, usually yes — get the crime number, photograph the damage, and the invoice here itemises parts and labour the way insurers like. General wear (a dropped door, a tired gearbox) counts as maintenance and sits outside most policies.

Which areas do you cover for uPVC door repairs?

All of Nottingham daily — Arnold, Carlton, Sherwood, Beeston, West Bridgford, Clifton, Hucknall — plus Derby, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Eastwood, Mansfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield. Same fixed pricing everywhere, no distance premium.
