Every Emergency Max Attends — 24/7
Locked out, broken key, snapped lock, door won’t open, burglary — Max covers all of it.
Locked Out
Lost keys, keys inside, lock jammed. uPVC, composite, timber, flat — all door types. Non-destructive entry always first. Most lock-outs resolved without damage to the door or frame.
After a Break-In
Property secured immediately. Compromised locks replaced, all entry points assessed. TS007 anti-snap cylinders as standard. Written report provided if required by your insurer. Call 101 first for a crime reference number.
Broken Key in Lock
Key broken in the lock. Extraction carried out without lock replacement in most cases. If the barrel is damaged, it is replaced at the same visit. New key supplied.
Snapped or Jammed Lock
Cylinder snapped in an attack, mechanism seized, multipoint lock failed leaving the door stuck. Max attends, gains access where needed, replaces the lock on the same visit.
Door Won’t Open or Lock
Mechanism failure leaving door stuck or unable to lock. Handle dropped, multipoint mechanism seized. All door types covered — uPVC, composite, timber, bifold, patio, French.
Commercial Emergency
Office, retail, café or commercial premises locked out or unsecured. Same rate as residential — no commercial surcharge. Covered across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield.
What Causes Emergency Lock Callouts
Most emergencies follow a pattern. They rarely happen without warning — the warning just gets ignored.
Worn or ignored lock
A lock that has been stiff or unreliable for weeks rarely fails at a convenient moment. Most emergency callouts are preceded by warning signs that were put off.
Lock snapping attack
Standard Euro cylinders protruding from the door face can be snapped in under 20 seconds. The most common forced-entry method on uPVC and composite doors across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
Key breaks in the lock
Keys break for two reasons: the key has thinned and worn, or the lock is stiff and the key is forced. A key that’s getting harder to turn should be addressed before it snaps.
Mechanism failure
Multipoint mechanisms have a service life. When the internal locking strip fails, the door cannot be locked — often mid-operation, leaving the door stuck open or shut.
Burglary damage
Forced entry leaves the property unsecured. Max attends burglaries 24/7 to secure immediately, assess all entry points and replace compromised locks on the same visit.
What to Do Right Now
Stay safe
If locked out, find a safe place to wait. If the property has been broken into and you’re unsure if someone is still inside — do not enter. Call 999 first.

How quickly can you attend an emergency in Nottingham?

Do you attend emergencies in Derby and Mansfield?

What information do you need when I call?
Max will ask: what type of door (uPVC, composite, timber), what type of lock if you know it, whether the key is in the lock or broken inside, and your postcode. That’s usually enough to give an accurate ETA and price before attending.
Locked Out
I'm locked out — what happens when you arrive?
Max assesses the lock type and attempts non-destructive entry first. The method depends on the door type — most modern uPVC and composite doors can be opened by manipulating the cylinder or mechanism directly without any damage. Older mortice locks on timber doors may occasionally require drilling as a last resort, but this is always discussed and agreed before any destructive method is used.
Can you open a door without damaging it?
In the vast majority of cases yes. Non-destructive entry is always the first approach and is successful in most lock-out situations. The cases where it isn’t possible are rare — usually very high-security cylinders, double-locked mortice deadlocks where the key is not accessible from outside, or severely damaged mechanisms. Max will tell you honestly which category your lock falls into over the phone.
What if I've lost my keys entirely?
Max gains entry, then the options are: (1) replace the cylinder with a new one and new keys — the quickest route, (2) have a key cut if a spare exists somewhere, or (3) for mortice locks, the lock itself may need replacing. For most uPVC and composite doors, a cylinder replacement is all that’s needed and takes 15 minutes.
I've locked myself out of a rental property — can you still help?
Yes. Max attends rental lock-outs the same as owner-occupier callouts. You will need to be able to demonstrate you have the right to access the property — tenancy agreement, utility bill or similar. Max cannot enter a property on behalf of a third party without the occupier present.
Broken Keys & Damaged Locks
My key has broken inside the lock — what happens?
Max extracts the broken section from the cylinder. In most cases the cylinder is undamaged and simply needs a new key cut — extraction without lock replacement. If the cylinder barrel has been damaged by the break or by forcing before Max arrived, it is replaced at the same visit.
My lock has been snapped — is the door still secure?
A snapped cylinder leaves the door mechanism vulnerable. The locking points may still be engaged but the cylinder is no longer providing security. Do not leave the property unsecured overnight. Max replaces snapped cylinders with TS007 anti-snap cylinders as standard — the new cylinder is significantly more resistant to a repeat attack than the one that was snapped.
My door won't lock — the handle lifts but nothing engages. Is this an emergency?
Yes, a door that cannot be locked is an unsecured property. The most common cause is a failed multipoint locking strip — the internal strip that drives all the locking points simultaneously. Max carries replacement mechanisms for the most common brands and can usually resolve this on the first visit.
The key turns but the door won't open. What's wrong?
Most likely the locking points are stuck in the keeps — the door has dropped on worn hinges or been slammed and the locking points are binding under load. Do not continue forcing the key or handle. Max will assess the specific cause and open the door without causing additional damage.
After a Break-In
My property has been broken into — what do I do?
Call 999 if you are not sure the property is clear. Call 101 once it is safe to do so and obtain a crime reference number — your insurer will require this. Then call Max. He will attend, secure the property, assess all potential entry points, replace compromised locks with TS007 anti-snap cylinders as standard, and provide a written report if required.
Can you secure a property after a break-in tonight?
Yes. Max responds to post-burglary callouts 24/7. Securing a property after a break-in is treated as a priority — Max will attend as quickly as possible regardless of the time.
Will you replace the lock with a better one after a break-in?
Yes — and you don’t need to wait for a burglary to get it. Max fits TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinders as standard on post-burglary callouts. These are available as an upgrade at any time for the same cost. The locks fitted after break-ins are the same ones available on a standard security upgrade visit.
Costs & Credentials
How much does an emergency call-out cost?
Emergency lock-outs start from £85 plus parts. Parts range from £15 to £120 depending on the lock type and what’s needed. An accurate quote is always confirmed over the phone before Max attends. No call-out fee. No out-of-hours surcharge. No VAT surprises — Max is VAT registered and all quotes include VAT.
Is Max DBS checked and insured?
Yes. Max is Enhanced DBS checked, fully insured for public liability, and an approved Checkatrade member with independently verified reviews. All credentials are verifiable before you commit. All work carries a 12-month warranty. About Max →
Why not use a national locksmith service?
National locksmith services typically operate through call centres and sub-contract to local locksmiths. Response times are estimates rather than commitments, pricing is rarely confirmed before attendance, and the person who arrives may never have been to your area before. When you call Max, you speak directly to the locksmith who will attend. The quote is accurate. The ETA is real.
More Common Questions
My door handle goes up but nothing engages — what's wrong?
This is almost certainly a failed internal mechanism. The mechanism converts handle movement into the locking action. When the cam or follower breaks inside, the handle moves freely but doesn’t drive the locking strip or points. The result is a door that appears to operate but cannot be locked. Max carries replacement mechanisms for GU, Mila, Fullex, Avocet and ERA as standard — most are replaced on the first visit.
My door has deadlocked and I can't get the key to turn — what do I do?
Do not force the key. A door that has deadlocked shut — where neither key nor handle will operate — usually means the locking points are under load from a misaligned door or a dropped hinge. The load prevents the key from withdrawing the points. Forcing the key in this situation bends or breaks it. Call Max — this requires releasing the load on the door before turning the key, which is done from the outside with specialist tools.
I've forced my door and now the frame is damaged — can you still help?
Yes. Forced entry damage — whether self-inflicted or from a break-in — is assessed on arrival. If the frame is damaged, Max will open the door, make it secure for that night, and advise on frame repair separately. The priority is always to get you secured before anything else. Frame repairs are usually a separate appointment.
What's the difference between a lockout and a lock-in?
A lockout is where you can’t get in — the most common emergency. A lock-in is where you’re inside but can’t get out — which is a fire safety issue and should be treated as urgent. uPVC doors that deadlock from the inside (requiring a key to exit) are a serious hazard. If you’re trapped inside, call 07552 421 433 immediately. Max can open the door from the outside in most cases.
Can you help if my lock has been damaged in a failed break-in attempt?
Yes. Attempted lock snapping, drill attacks, or picking attempts leave the cylinder and sometimes the mechanism damaged — often enough to prevent normal operation. Max attends failed break-in callouts the same as successful ones. The cylinder is replaced with a TS007 anti-snap cylinder as standard, and the mechanism is checked for internal damage.
Do I need to be home for you to attend?
You or an authorised adult need to be present. Max cannot open a property for someone who is not there, not confirmed as an occupier, or cannot demonstrate a right to access. For commercial properties, the attending person needs to be able to authorise the work. For landlord callouts where the tenant is present, the tenant’s consent is required.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cash, card, bank transfer, Apple Pay and Google Pay. A digital invoice is issued immediately. For commercial work, payment terms can be arranged. There is no card surcharge.
How do I know you won't overcharge me once you're on site?
The price is confirmed over the phone before Max attends. It is not an estimate — it is the price for the job described. If something is significantly different on site (for example a lock that has been drilled and damaged already), Max will say so before starting work and confirm a revised price before proceeding. You are never charged more than agreed without your explicit consent.

Expert Knowledge
What Causes Emergency Lock Failures?
Based on hundreds of callouts across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield — these are the patterns Max sees week in, week out.
The pattern Max sees every day
The most common emergency callout in Nottingham is a failed uPVC multipoint mechanism — the handle suddenly stops lifting, or the door deadlocks shut and won’t open from either side. This is especially prevalent in properties built between 1995 and 2015 across Arnold, Carlton, Beeston, and West Bridgford, where uPVC doors were fitted as standard and the mechanisms have now reached end-of-life.
Ignored alignment issues are the most common root cause. When a door starts sticking or the handle feels slightly stiff, most people just force it harder. Repeatedly forcing the handle puts extreme stress on the mechanism, accelerating wear until it fails completely. A small alignment fix early costs a fraction of a full mechanism replacement later.
Incorrect maintenance causes a surprising number of failures. uPVC mechanisms need PTFE-based dry lubricant applied annually. WD-40 attracts dust and thickens over time. The result is a mechanism that seizes solid.
Bad key copies slowly destroy the cylinder from within. A poorly cut duplicate grinds the pins on every use. If your key needs effort, get the cylinder checked before it fails completely.
