Why People Call

When to Change or Replace Your Locks

Most of these are everyday, quick jobs — a 15-minute cylinder change that locks out every old key. Max tells you on the phone which one you actually need.

Moving In

Moved into a new home

Previous key holders unknown — owners, agents, builders, cleaners. A cylinder change is a quick job that puts you back in full control. Recommended on the day you move in.

Do It Promptly

Lost or stolen keys

Change the lock and every old key stops working. If keys were stolen with anything showing your address, treat it as urgent — same-day — 24/7 emergency line →

Key Security

Keys never returned

Ex-partner, former lodger, old flatmate, previous cleaner. A cylinder change makes you the only key holder again — in minutes, without changing the whole lock.

Urgent

After a break-in or attempt

Compromised locks replaced same-day — anti-snap upgrades on the van — every entry point checked, written report for your insurer. Full make-safe via the after-burglary service.

Policy Condition

Insurance requirement

Insurer naming BS3621 on timber doors, or anti-snap on uPVC and composite? Max confirms the exact specification your policy wording asks for — and fits the right rated lock, first visit.

Landlords

Tenancy changeover

Best practice between every tenancy. Multiple doors re-keyed in one visit — keyed alike where sizes allow. Fast turnaround for letting agents to minimise void periods.

By Door Type

Door Lock Replacement — uPVC, Composite, Wooden, Aluminium

The right lock depends on the door — and the door decides what your insurer expects. Pick your door type; Max advises free, before any work starts.

uPVC Door Lock Replacement

The most common door in Nottingham — and the most commonly attacked. A euro cylinder change locks out every old key: like-for-like, or upgraded to TS007 3★ anti-snap. All grades carried on the van.

  • Cylinder change — moving in, lost keys, tenancy changeover. New keys cut and tested on the spot
  • Anti-snap upgrade — TS007 3★ cylinders in stock for the doors snapping targets most
  • Handle & cylinder sets — matched security handles where the old ones are tired

Handle stiff, or nothing moves when you lift it? That’s the mechanism, not the cylinder — door lock repair covers it.

  • Anti-snap upgrades — composite doors are a prime snapping target; TS007 3★ in stock
  • Colour-matched hardware — gold, black and chrome handle sets to suit the door
  • Keyed alike where sizes allow — one key for front and back

Door dropped or rubbing? That’s the door, not the lock — composite door repairs.

  • BS3621-rated mortice deadlocks — Yale, Union, Chubb, ERA, Legge, Ingersoll
  • Deadlocking nightlatches — can’t be slipped with a card; BS-rated versions available

Not Just Front Doors

Windows, Garages, Shutters, Gates & Commercial — All Covered

If it locks, Max replaces it. Same one-visit approach, same no-call-out-fee rule, whatever the lock is on.

Window Lock Replacement

Key-locking handles, espagnolette mechanisms and shootbolt systems on uPVC, timber and aluminium windows. Handle spins but nothing locks? That’s the mechanism behind the handle — replaced, not bodged. Insurers often require key-operated locks on accessible ground-floor windows. Window repairs →

Garage Door Lock Replacement

T-handles and euro-cylinder locks for up-and-over doors (Garador, Henderson patterns), deadlocks for side-hinged doors, locking kits for roller doors — the lock only, never the springs. An internal garage door is a front door in disguise: worth the same anti-snap thinking.

Roller Shutter Locks

Bullet (pin) locks through the guide rails, central shootbolt locks and ground locks for manual shutters — and lock replacement on electric shutters too. Shops, units and forecourts across Nottingham, Derby & Mansfield, replaced after wear or a forced-entry attempt.

Commercial & Shopfront

Adams Rite deadlatches and patch-fitting locks for glass shopfronts, narrow-stile aluminium locks, rim deadlocks, master-key suites and restricted keyways — keys that can’t be copied without your authorisation. Same rate as residential, no commercial surcharge.

Flats, HMOs & Communal Doors

Keyless-egress BS8621 locks so residents can always get out without a key — the fire-safe standard for flats, and what insurers typically accept in place of BS3621. Multiple flats keyed and scheduled in one visit for landlords and agents.

Gates, Sheds & Outbuildings

Gate mortice and long-throw locks, hasps & staples, and Sold Secure–rated padlocks matched to what your insurer asks for. Yards, side gates, sheds and garden offices — priced like any other lock, quoted before the visit.

All Lock Types

Every Lock Type Max Replaces & Fits

Residential, commercial, period and high-security. Tap a lock type for what’s involved, the brands carried, and the honest price range for the part.

Euro Cylinders

uPVC, composite & aluminium — anti-snap upgrades, TS007 3-star, keyed alike

The most common lock on uPVC, composite and aluminium doors across Nottingham — and the most commonly attacked. Standard cylinders protruding 3mm+ can be snapped in 15–20 seconds with hardware-shop tools. Max carries TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinders in stock: they break at a built-in sacrificial point and keep the door locked even under attack.

Anti-Snap Upgrades

TS007 3★ anti-snap cylinders stocked as standard — specific brands sourced on request. Meets police guidance and most insurer wording.

Standard Replacement

Like-for-like change — correct size measured on site, new keys cut, old keys dead. The everyday moving-in and tenancy job.

High Security

Bump-proof, pick- and drill-resistant cylinders. Lockdown models go further: attack one and it jams itself solid in the mechanism — no quiet way in.

Keying Alike

Front, back and garage on one key — possible where cylinder sizes and profiles match; confirmed when you book.

Also: oval-profile cylinders (£20–£40), commercial mortise-threaded (£35–£70) and Scandinavian-pattern (£35+).

Mortice Deadlocks & Sash Locks

Timber doors — BS3621 insurance-grade, 5-lever, rating stamped on the faceplate

Fitted into the body of a timber door. BS3621 requires 5 levers minimum, 1,000 key differs, a hardened anti-saw bolt and a bolt that can’t be pushed back without the key — the standard most insurers name for external timber doors. Standard mortice locks from around £35; BS3621 insurance-grade from £45.

BS3621-Rated

Yale, Union, Chubb, ERA, Legge, Ingersoll — the rating and year are stamped on the faceplate.

Sash Locks

Deadbolt + latch in one case — latches on closing, deadlocks with the key. BS3621 versions available.

Period Lock Replacement

Victorian & Edwardian rim locks and 2/3-lever mortices upgraded to BS3621 without spoiling original furniture — an NG3–NG7 speciality.

Flats & HMOs — BS8621

Keyless egress: thumb-turn inside so occupants always get out without a key. The fire-safe standard insurers accept for flats.

Nightlatches (Yale-Type)

Timber front doors — standard, deadlocking & BS-rated rim locks

Standard Nightlatch

Auto-latching rim lock, key outside, thumb-turn inside — the classic fitting on Victorian terraces across Nottingham.

Deadlocking Nightlatch

Deadlocks as the door closes — can’t be slipped with a card. The recommended default; BS3621-rated versions for insurance.

Double-Cylinder

Key-operated both sides — for doors with glass nearby, so breaking a pane doesn’t let anyone reach in and open up.

Tenancy Changes

The fastest tenancy re-key going — new keys handed over, old keys dead.

Multipoint Mechanisms

uPVC & composite full-mechanism replacement — all brands identified & matched

Multipoint locks throw hooks, rollers or mushrooms into the frame when you lift the handle. When the mechanism fails, the door often can’t lock at all — or deadlocks shut. Max identifies the brand from backset, case measurement and hook layout, then fits a compatible unit — genuine parts, never pattern copies; proven equivalents where genuine is discontinued.

Carried as standard: GU · Mila · Fullex · ERA · Avocet · Winkhaus · Fuhr · Roto · Yale · Nico · AGB. Door deadlocked shut? Max opens it without damage first — see the Wollaton & Hucknall jobs below.

Window Locks

Key-locking handles, espagnolette and shootbolt mechanisms, shootbolts, sash & restrictor locks

uPVC Windows

Key-locking espag handles and espagnolette and shootbolt mechanisms — the fix when the handle turns but nothing locks.

Timber Windows

Casement fasteners & stays, sash locks and dual screws for traditional sliding sashes.

Insurance Compliance

Key-operated locks on accessible ground-floor windows — commonly required; police-preferred espag systems fitted.

Child Safety

Opening restrictors — required in many HMO and rental settings.

Garage & Shutter Locks

T-handles, up-and-over locks, bullet & shootbolt shutter locks, ground locks

Up-and-Over Doors

T-handle locks & cable sets (Garador, Henderson patterns), euro-cylinder conversions, internal deadbolts. Lock only — never the springs.

Side-Hinged & Sheds

Deadlocks, long-throw locks, hasps & Sold Secure padlocks matched to insurer wording.

Roller Shutters

Bullet (pin) locks through the guides, central shootbolt locks, ground locks — manual and electric shutters.

Defenders & Extras

Garage door defenders and anti-lift measures where the door itself is the weak point.

Smart Locks

Keyless entry, app control, virtual keys — trusted brands only

Supplied and fitted on the right doors, from trusted brands only — cheap unbranded smart units are a security risk, not a saving. Ideal for landlords, carers’ access and busy households; paired with a compliant mechanical lock where the door or policy needs it. Full brands and options on the dedicated smart lock installation page — key safes for carers and family access on the key safe installation page.

Commercial & Specialist Locks

Adams Rite, patch fittings, restricted keyways, master-key suites, gates & barriers

Glass Shopfronts

Adams Rite deadlatch replacement and patch-fitting cylinder upgrades — parts most general locksmiths don’t carry. See the Starbucks & Tesla jobs below.

High-Security Commercial

Mul-T-Lock, ASSA Abloy, Ingersoll, Abloy disc-detainer — restricted systems where key copies need your authorisation.

Master-Key Suites

One key for management, individual keys per door — offices, HMOs and multi-unit premises.

Gates & Barriers

Gate mortice locks, padlock hasps, barrier cylinders — car parks, yards and industrial premises.

All major brands stocked — parts on every job: Ultion · ABS Avocet · Yale · Union · Chubb · ERA · Legge · Ingersoll · Mul-T-Lock · ASSA Abloy · GU · Mila · Fullex · Avocet · Winkhaus · Fuhr · Roto · Adams Rite · Brisant · AGB · UAP · Ingenious

Standards, Insurance & Police Guidance

What TS007, SS312 & BS3621 Actually Mean

Not all locks are the same — the lock that came with your door is often the bare minimum, not the insurer-grade one. The plain-English version:

TS007 — 1★ vs 3★

The Kitemark star rating for euro cylinders. A 1★ cylinder alone isn’t snap-proof — you need 3★ protection: a 3★ cylinder, or a 1★ cylinder paired with 2★ security hardware. 3★ resists snapping, picking, bumping, drilling and plug extraction.

Sold Secure SS312 Diamond

An independent test where the cylinder faces a sustained attack with no help from handles or guards — widely considered the toughest euro-cylinder grade you can fit. Premium cylinders often carry both SS312 and TS007 3★.

BS3621 · BS8621 · BS10621

BS3621: the 5-lever mortice standard insurers name for timber doors — key both sides. BS8621: keyless egress (thumb-turn inside) for flats & HMOs — always able to get out in a fire. BS10621: dual-mode, external-locking only — rare, specialist use.

What Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Police recommend: anti-snap cylinders rated TS007 3★ or Sold Secure Diamond on all uPVC and composite doors, BS3621 mortice deadlocks on external timber doors, and key-operated locks on accessible ground-floor windows. Lock snapping remains the most common forced-entry method on uPVC and composite doors across both counties.

Diagnose Your Lock

What Does Your Lock Symptom Mean?

Eight faults Max sees every week — what each one means, and the honest answer: replace, or the cheaper repair.

Urgent

Key won’t turn at all

Could be the cylinder, the mechanism behind it — or just alignment. Quick test: open the door and try the key. Turns fine open but not shut? The door has dropped and it’s an alignment job, not a lock. Fails both ways? It needs eyes on it — Max books a visit, confirms cylinder or mechanism on the doorstep, and agrees the price before any work starts.

Diagnose first — free

Urgent

Handle lifts but nothing moves

Multipoint mechanism failure — the hooks and rollers no longer respond to the handle. The most common uPVC fault Max attends: a compatible unit is fitted, and a vulnerable cylinder can be upgraded in the same visit.

REPLACE mechanism

Urgent

Door deadlocked shut — handle dead

Failed mechanism with the hooks thrown. Max opens the door without damage, strips the failed unit and rebuilds — one visit, one straightforward job, no “emergency premium”.

Open + REPLACE

Catch It Early

Key stiff, scratchy or gritty

Worn pins or a dry cylinder. Caught early it’s serviceable; ignored, it becomes a snapped-key lockout. Never spray WD-40 into a lock — it gums the pins and accelerates failure.

Often REPAIR

Assess First

Key snapped in the lock

The fragment is extracted first — the cylinder often survives and you just need keys. If a failing mechanism caused the snap, that’s the real fault to fix, and Max will say so.

Extract, then assess

Catch It Early

Handle droops or won’t spring back

Tired handle springs — or the spring cassette inside the mechanism on its way out. Either way it’s a small fix now that prevents a deadlocked door later.

REPAIR / handles

Alignment

Lift, shove or pull to lock

The door has dropped and the hooks miss their keeps — an alignment fault, not a lock fault. Forcing it is what kills locking mechanisms. Hinge and keep adjustment usually cures it.

REPAIR / adjust

Windows

Window handle spins freely

The mechanism behind the handle has failed — the window isn’t locking even when it feels shut. An insurance problem on ground-floor windows. Mechanism matched and replaced.

REPLACE mechanism

Never spray WD-40 into a lock or mechanism

WD-40 is a solvent and water-displacer, not a lubricant. Inside a cylinder or multipoint it washes out the grease that’s meant to be there, then dries tacky and traps grit — grinding the moving parts. Use instead: a PTFE dry-lubricant on mechanism and hinge points, and graphite in the cylinder — once or twice a year is plenty. Full symptom library: common door, lock & window faults →

Frequently Asked Questions

Lock Replacement & Fitting — Every Question Answered

Can’t find your question? Call Max on 07552 421 433 — most situations are diagnosed and quoted over the phone in minutes.

Quick Answers — The Questions People Actually Ask

Who can change a lock near me in Nottingham today?

Max The Locksmith — an independent, DBS-checked locksmith based in Nottingham — changes and fits locks same-day across Nottingham (NG1–NG16), Derby, Mansfield and the villages between, from £85 + parts with no call-out fee. You speak to Max directly on 07552 421 433, not a call centre, and the exact price is agreed before he sets off.

My key won’t turn in the lock — what should I do?

Stop forcing it — and don’t spray WD-40 in, it gums the pins and makes things worse. If the handle lifts but the key won’t turn, the cylinder has usually failed; if the handle won’t lift at all, it’s the multipoint mechanism. Both are same-day fixes. Call Max on 07552 421 433 and he’ll diagnose it over the phone free, usually in a couple of minutes.

My key snapped in the lock — does the whole lock need replacing?

Often not. The broken piece is extracted first, and in many cases the cylinder survives and you just need spare keys. If the key snapped because the lock was already failing, that’s the fault to fix — and Max will tell you honestly which it is. Either way the door itself never needs replacing for a lock fault.

The handle lifts but the door won’t lock — who fixes that?

A locksmith, not a door company. That symptom is a failed multipoint mechanism (or, if the key won’t turn at the final stage, the cylinder). Max carries GU, Mila, Fullex, ERA, Avocet and Winkhaus mechanisms and replaces most on the first visit across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield.

Can a locksmith open my door without damaging it?

Yes — non-destructive entry is always the first approach, even on doors deadlocked shut with a failed mechanism. Max opens the door without damaging the door or frame, then repairs or replaces the failed part. See the Wollaton and Hucknall jobs on this page for exactly that scenario.

How fast can a locksmith get to me in Nottingham, Derby or Mansfield?

The target is around 30 minutes across Nottingham postcodes and 30–45 minutes for Derby and Mansfield, 24/7. Same-day is the norm for lock replacements because parts for the common lock types are already on the van — 95% of jobs finish on the first visit. Prefer a booked appointment? Evenings and weekends cost the same as daytime.

Is a “£39 locksmith” advert too good to be true?

Almost always. That figure is bait — the invoice grows with call-out fees, “labour supplements” and inflated parts once the door is open. A realistic benchmark for a straightforward lock change is around £85 labour plus the part, in line with Master Locksmiths Association guidance. Full breakdown: Max’s price guide and the MLA national price list.

How do I choose a trustworthy locksmith?

Check four things: a verifiable DBS check, public liability insurance, independently verified reviews (Checkatrade, Google — not just testimonials on their own site), and a firm all-in price before attendance. Max meets all four: Enhanced DBS, fully insured, Checkatrade-approved with 600+ verified five-star reviews, and every quote agreed before the visit — with a 12-month warranty after it.

Costs & Pricing

How much does it cost to change or replace a lock?

From £85 labour plus the part (+ VAT). Parts range from £15 to £120+ depending on the lock type and security rating: a standard euro cylinder change sits at the lower end; a BS3621 mortice fitting or a high-security restricted-keyway cylinder at the higher end. The exact all-in quote — including parts — is confirmed over the phone before Max attends.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

No — never. There is no call-out fee across Nottingham (NG1–NG16), Derby, Mansfield and the covered surrounding areas. The price agreed over the phone is the price for the completed job.

Is it more expensive at night or on weekends?

No weekend rates and no evening surcharge — the same price as a weekday appointment. The only exception is overnight call-outs (10pm–6am), which are a flat from £95 + VAT instead of £85.

How long does a lock replacement take?

A single cylinder change is usually done well within the hour; mortice and multipoint work can take longer depending on the door. 95% of jobs finish on the first visit because parts are carried on the van.

Do I get a quote before you attend?

Yes, always. Max asks about the door type, the lock type if known, and the reason for the change, then gives an accurate range over the phone. The exact figure including parts is agreed before any work starts — no surprises on the invoice.

Cylinders & Anti-Snap

What is a TS007 anti-snap cylinder and do I need one?

A TS007 3-star cylinder has a built-in sacrificial snap point: if a burglar attempts to snap it — the most common forced-entry method on uPVC and composite doors — the cylinder breaks at the engineered point while the cam stays intact and the door stays locked. Standard cylinders protruding 3mm+ can be snapped in under 20 seconds. Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Police both recommend TS007 3★ (or Sold Secure Diamond) on all uPVC and composite doors. If your door has a standard cylinder, this is the single highest-return upgrade available.

How do I know if my cylinder is vulnerable to snapping?

Stand outside the closed door and look at the cylinder. If any part protrudes beyond the handle face — even 2–3mm — it can be snapped. Check for anti-snap markings too (TS007 stars or a BSI kitemark on the cylinder face). Unsure? Send Max a photo on WhatsApp and he’ll tell you within minutes, free.

What’s the difference between TS007 3-star and Sold Secure Diamond?

Both are top anti-snap grades. TS007 3★ is the BSI Kitemark route and tests the cylinder against snapping, picking, bumping, drilling and extraction. Sold Secure SS312 Diamond tests the bare cylinder — no help from handles or guards — against a heavier tool list, and is widely considered the hardest grade to pass. Premium cylinders often carry both; either satisfies police guidance and typical insurer wording.

Which anti-snap cylinder brands do you fit?

TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinders are stocked as standard, with high-security and lockdown models available across several trusted brands — matched to your door and budget when you book. Price rises with certification level, not branding.

Can you key multiple locks alike so one key opens everything?

Often, yes — where the cylinders are compatible sizes and profiles, they can be keyed alike so one key runs several doors. It isn’t possible with every mix (different cylinder sizes, or BS-rated mortice locks, for example), so Max confirms what your doors allow when you book.

What is lockdown mode on a high-security cylinder?

Lockdown is an anti-snap defence on certain high-security cylinders — several brands offer it. If the cylinder is attacked, it locks itself solid inside the mechanism: even with the front snapped off, the door stays shut and the only way through is slow, loud, destructive drilling. It turns a silent 20-second attack into one that isn’t worth attempting.

Mortice Locks & Wooden Doors

What is a BS3621 lock and does my insurance need it?

BS3621 is the British Standard for thief-resistant mortice deadlocks on external timber doors: minimum 5 levers, 1,000 key differs, hardened anti-saw bolt, and a bolt that can’t be pushed back without the key. Many home insurance policies name BS3621 on timber final-exit doors as a condition of cover — without it, a claim after a break-in could be affected even if the door was locked. Max fits BS3621-rated locks same-day across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield.

How do I check if my mortice lock is BS3621?

Three checks: (1) look for “BS3621” or the BSI kitemark stamped on the faceplate or case; (2) it should say “5 Lever” — 2- or 3-lever locks don’t qualify; (3) lock it and try pushing the bolt back by hand — a BS3621 bolt won’t move.

Check the year too: BS3621 has been revised several times since 1980, and a lock stamped to the original 1980s version is not the same as one meeting the current standard. If the stamp looks vintage, check your policy wording — or send Max a photo.

What is a sash lock?

A sash lock combines a latch and a deadbolt in one case: the door latches shut on closing, and deadlocks fully when the key is turned. Common on timber front and back doors. Some sash locks are BS3621-rated, many aren’t — check the faceplate stamp rather than assuming.

I live in a flat or HMO — is BS3621 right for me?

Usually not — you likely need BS8621, the keyless-egress version: key outside, thumb-turn inside, so everyone can always get out without hunting for a key in a fire. Insurers generally accept BS8621 for flats, and it’s the standard fitting for HMO and communal doors. Max fits both and will tell you which your door and policy need.

uPVC, Composite & Multipoint

My uPVC or composite door won’t lock — is it the cylinder or the mechanism?

Quick test: if the handle lifts and the hooks engage but the key won’t turn, it’s the cylinder. If the handle won’t lift smoothly or the locking points don’t all engage, it’s the multipoint mechanism. Max diagnoses this over the phone in most cases — and if it’s genuinely repairable, he’ll say so (see door lock repair).

Can you replace just the cylinder without the whole lock?

In most cases yes. On uPVC and composite doors the euro cylinder swaps independently of the mechanism — which is why a moving-in lock change is quick and affordable. On timber doors, the lock body and cylinder are separate components too. Max confirms which applies during the first call.

Which multipoint mechanism brands do you carry?

GU, Mila, Fullex, ERA, Avocet, Winkhaus, Fuhr, Roto, Yale, Nico and AGB are the common ones. Max identifies the existing unit by backset, case measurement and hook configuration, then fits the correct replacement — most on the first visit.

My door is deadlocked shut and the handle is floppy — what now?

That’s a failed mechanism with the hooks thrown — the door has to be opened before anything else. Max opens it without damaging the door or frame, then strips and replaces the failed mechanism. One visit, one straightforward job — no “emergency premium”.

Moving Home, Tenancy & Landlords

I’ve just moved house — should I change the locks?

Yes, immediately. You can’t know how many key copies exist or who holds them — previous owners, estate agents, builders, tradespeople, cleaners. A cylinder change is a quick job, and Max can usually do it the day you move in.

Should landlords change locks between tenancies?

It’s not a legal requirement in England, but it’s firmly best practice and increasingly expected by letting agents: a previous tenant with a key copy is an access risk you can’t audit. A cylinder change between tenancies is quick, and a whole property is typically re-keyed in a single visit.

Can you change locks on multiple doors in one visit?

Yes — multiple cylinders and lock types are carried on every job, and a whole property is typically re-keyed in a single visit, with all new keys supplied and tested.

Do you work with letting agents and property managers?

Yes, across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield — tenancy lock changes, HMO compliance (BS8621, master-key suites), security upgrades and emergency callouts, prioritised to minimise void periods. Contact Max →

Windows, Garages, Shutters & Everything Else

Do you replace window locks?

Yes — key-locking handles, espagnolette and shootbolt mechanisms and shootbolt systems on uPVC, timber and aluminium windows, plus sash locks and restrictors. Insurers commonly require key-operated locks on accessible ground-floor windows; Max confirms compliance while he’s there.

Do you replace garage door locks?

Yes — T-handle locks and cables for up-and-over doors (Garador, Henderson patterns), euro-cylinder garage locks, deadlocks for side-hinged doors and locking kits for roller doors. The lock only, never the springs — spring work is a garage-door-engineer job and Max will say so honestly.

Do you replace roller shutter locks — including electric shutters?

Yes. Bullet (pin) locks, central shootbolt locks and ground locks on manual shutters, and lock replacement on electric shutters too — shops, units and forecourts across all three areas, often outside trading hours.

Do you fit locks on gates, sheds and outbuildings?

Yes — gate mortice and long-throw locks, hasps & staples, and Sold Secure–rated padlocks matched to your insurer’s wording. Garden offices and stores with valuable kit are worth the same thinking as the house.

Can you fit a smart lock?

Yes — supplied and fitted from £150 using trusted brands only; cheap unbranded units are a security risk, not a saving. Where the door or your policy needs it, the smart lock is paired with a compliant mechanical lock. Full options on the smart lock installation page.

Do you replace locks on bi-fold, stable and fire doors?

Yes. Bi-folds: multipoint + shootbolt systems matched by fold configuration. Stable doors: upper and lower locking made to work together properly. Fire doors: fire-rated cylinders, handles and mortice locks only, so the door’s certification is preserved — essential for HMOs and communal areas.

Commercial

Do you replace commercial locks?

Yes — offices, retail, cafés, restaurants, dealerships and industrial units, at the same rate as residential with no commercial surcharge. Adams Rite, patch fittings, restricted keyways, high-security suites and access-control cylinders all covered; out-of-hours attendance where it avoids disrupting trade.

Can you replace a lock on a glass shopfront door?

Yes. Frameless and minimal-frame glass doors use patch-fitting locks or Adams Rite deadlatches — specialist parts many general locksmiths don’t carry. Max attends commercial glass-door callouts across Nottingham city centre and Derby, typically same day (see the Starbucks and Tesla jobs above).

What is a restricted keyway and when is it worth it?

A restricted keyway uses a key profile that can’t be cut at a standard key shop without your authorisation — so a departed employee or former tenant can’t quietly make copies. Worth it after staff changes and for any premises where key control matters.

After a Break-In, Credentials & Coverage

What should I do immediately after a break-in?

Call 101 (999 if the intruder may still be there) and get a crime reference number; don’t disturb the scene until police have attended. Then call Max — he responds 24/7, secures the property, identifies every entry point, replaces compromised locks — anti-snap options on the van — and provides a written report for your insurer if needed. Boarding and full make-safe: after-burglary service.

Is Max DBS checked, insured and guaranteed?

Yes — Enhanced DBS checked, fully insured for public liability, and a Checkatrade-approved member with independently verified reviews. Every job carries a 12-month warranty on parts and labour, on top of manufacturer warranties from brands like Yale, Ultion and ERA. About Max →
