Lock Replacement in Nottingham —
Every Door & Window

Max The Locksmith — an independent, DBS-checked locksmith based in Nottingham — changes and fits locks same-day across Nottingham (NG1–NG16), Derby, Mansfield and the villages between, from £85 + parts with no call-out fee. You speak to Max directly on 07552 421433Call Max, not a call centre, and the exact price is agreed before he sets off.

Stop forcing it — and don’t spray WD-40 in, it gums the pins and makes things worse. If the handle lifts but the key won’t turn, the cylinder has usually failed; if the handle won’t lift at all, it’s the multipoint mechanism. Both are same-day fixes. Call Max on 07552 421433 and he’ll diagnose it over the phone free, usually in a couple of minutes.

Often not. The broken piece is extracted first, and in many cases the cylinder survives and you just need spare keys. If the key snapped because the lock was already failing, that’s the fault to fix — and Max will tell you honestly which it is. Either way the door itself never needs replacing for a lock fault.

A locksmith, not a door company. That symptom is a failed multipoint mechanism (or, if the key won’t turn at the final stage, the cylinder). Max carries GU, Mila, Fullex, ERA, Avocet and Winkhaus mechanisms and replaces most on the first visit across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield.

Yes — non-destructive entry is always the first approach, even on doors deadlocked shut with a failed mechanism. Max opens the door without damaging the door or frame, then repairs or replaces the failed part. See the Wollaton and Hucknall jobs on this page for exactly that scenario.

The target is around 30 minutes across Nottingham postcodes and 30–45 minutes for Derby and Mansfield, 24/7. Same-day is the norm for lock replacements because parts for the common lock types are already on the van — 95% of jobs finish on the first visit. Prefer a booked appointment? Evenings and weekends cost the same as daytime.

Almost always. That figure is bait — the invoice grows with call-out fees, “labour supplements” and inflated parts once the door is open. A realistic benchmark for a straightforward lock change is around £85 labour plus the part, in line with Master Locksmiths Association guidance. Full breakdown: Max’s price guide and the MLA national price list.

Check four things: a verifiable DBS check, public liability insurance, independently verified reviews (Checkatrade, Google — not just testimonials on their own site), and a firm all-in price before attendance. Max meets all four: Enhanced DBS, fully insured, Checkatrade-approved with 600+ verified five-star reviews, and every quote agreed before the visit — with a 12-month warranty after it.

From £85 labour plus the part (+ VAT). Parts range from £15 to £120+ depending on the lock type and security rating: a standard euro cylinder change sits at the lower end; a BS3621 mortice fitting or a high-security restricted-keyway cylinder at the higher end. The exact all-in quote — including parts — is confirmed over the phone before Max attends.

No — never. There is no call-out fee across Nottingham (NG1–NG16), Derby, Mansfield and the covered surrounding areas. The price agreed over the phone is the price for the completed job.

No weekend rates and no evening surcharge — the same price as a weekday appointment. The only exception is overnight call-outs (10pm–6am), which are a flat from £95 + VAT instead of £85.

A single cylinder change is usually done well within the hour; mortice and multipoint work can take longer depending on the door. 95% of jobs finish on the first visit because parts are carried on the van.

Yes, always. Max asks about the door type, the lock type if known, and the reason for the change, then gives an accurate range over the phone. The exact figure including parts is agreed before any work starts — no surprises on the invoice.

A TS007 3-star cylinder has a built-in sacrificial snap point: if a burglar attempts to snap it — the most common forced-entry method on uPVC and composite doors — the cylinder breaks at the engineered point while the cam stays intact and the door stays locked. Standard cylinders protruding 3mm+ can be snapped in under 20 seconds. Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Police both recommend TS007 3★ (or Sold Secure Diamond) on all uPVC and composite doors. If your door has a standard cylinder, this is the single highest-return upgrade available.

Stand outside the closed door and look at the cylinder. If any part protrudes beyond the handle face — even 2–3mm — it can be snapped. Check for anti-snap markings too (TS007 stars or a BSI kitemark on the cylinder face). Unsure? Send Max a photo on WhatsApp and he’ll tell you within minutes, free.

Both are top anti-snap grades. TS007 3★ is the BSI Kitemark route and tests the cylinder against snapping, picking, bumping, drilling and extraction. Sold Secure SS312 Diamond tests the bare cylinder — no help from handles or guards — against a heavier tool list, and is widely considered the hardest grade to pass. Premium cylinders often carry both; either satisfies police guidance and typical insurer wording.

TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinders are stocked as standard, with high-security and lockdown models available across several trusted brands — matched to your door and budget when you book. Price rises with certification level, not branding.

Often, yes — where the cylinders are compatible sizes and profiles, they can be keyed alike so one key runs several doors. It isn’t possible with every mix (different cylinder sizes, or BS-rated mortice locks, for example), so Max confirms what your doors allow when you book.

Lockdown is an anti-snap defence on certain high-security cylinders — several brands offer it. If the cylinder is attacked, it locks itself solid inside the mechanism: even with the front snapped off, the door stays shut and the only way through is slow, loud, destructive drilling. It turns a silent 20-second attack into one that isn’t worth attempting.

BS3621 is the British Standard for thief-resistant mortice deadlocks on external timber doors: minimum 5 levers, 1,000 key differs, hardened anti-saw bolt, and a bolt that can’t be pushed back without the key. Many home insurance policies name BS3621 on timber final-exit doors as a condition of cover — without it, a claim after a break-in could be affected even if the door was locked. Max fits BS3621-rated locks same-day across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield.

Three checks: (1) look for “BS3621” or the BSI kitemark stamped on the faceplate or case; (2) it should say “5 Lever” — 2- or 3-lever locks don’t qualify; (3) lock it and try pushing the bolt back by hand — a BS3621 bolt won’t move.

Check the year too: BS3621 has been revised several times since 1980, and a lock stamped to the original 1980s version is not the same as one meeting the current standard. If the stamp looks vintage, check your policy wording — or send Max a photo.

A sash lock combines a latch and a deadbolt in one case: the door latches shut on closing, and deadlocks fully when the key is turned. Common on timber front and back doors. Some sash locks are BS3621-rated, many aren’t — check the faceplate stamp rather than assuming.

Usually not — you likely need BS8621, the keyless-egress version: key outside, thumb-turn inside, so everyone can always get out without hunting for a key in a fire. Insurers generally accept BS8621 for flats, and it’s the standard fitting for HMO and communal doors. Max fits both and will tell you which your door and policy need.

Quick test: if the handle lifts and the hooks engage but the key won’t turn, it’s the cylinder. If the handle won’t lift smoothly or the locking points don’t all engage, it’s the multipoint mechanism. Max diagnoses this over the phone in most cases — and if it’s genuinely repairable, he’ll say so (see door lock repair).

In most cases yes. On uPVC and composite doors the euro cylinder swaps independently of the mechanism — which is why a moving-in lock change is quick and affordable. On timber doors, the lock body and cylinder are separate components too. Max confirms which applies during the first call.

GU, Mila, Fullex, ERA, Avocet, Winkhaus, Fuhr, Roto, Yale, Nico and AGB are the common ones. Max identifies the existing unit by backset, case measurement and hook configuration, then fits the correct replacement — most on the first visit.

That’s a failed mechanism with the hooks thrown — the door has to be opened before anything else. Max opens it without damaging the door or frame, then strips and replaces the failed mechanism. One visit, one straightforward job — no “emergency premium”.

Yes, immediately. You can’t know how many key copies exist or who holds them — previous owners, estate agents, builders, tradespeople, cleaners. A cylinder change is a quick job, and Max can usually do it the day you move in.

It’s not a legal requirement in England, but it’s firmly best practice and increasingly expected by letting agents: a previous tenant with a key copy is an access risk you can’t audit. A cylinder change between tenancies is quick, and a whole property is typically re-keyed in a single visit.

Yes — multiple cylinders and lock types are carried on every job, and a whole property is typically re-keyed in a single visit, with all new keys supplied and tested.

Yes, across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield — tenancy lock changes, HMO compliance (BS8621, master-key suites), security upgrades and emergency callouts, prioritised to minimise void periods. Contact Max →

Yes — key-locking handles, espagnolette and shootbolt mechanisms and shootbolt systems on uPVC, timber and aluminium windows, plus sash locks and restrictors. Insurers commonly require key-operated locks on accessible ground-floor windows; Max confirms compliance while he’s there.

Yes — T-handle locks and cables for up-and-over doors (Garador, Henderson patterns), euro-cylinder locks, deadlocks for side-hinged doors and locking kits for roller doors. The lock only, never the springs — spring work is a -door-engineer job and Max will say so honestly.

Yes. Bullet (pin) locks, central shootbolt locks and ground locks on manual — shops, units and forecourts across all three areas, often outside trading hours.

Yes — mortice and long-throw locks, hasps & staples, and Sold Secure–rated padlocks matched to your insurer’s wording. Garden offices and stores with valuable kit are worth the same thinking as the house.

Yes — supplied and fitted from £150 using trusted brands only; cheap unbranded units are a security risk, not a saving. Where the door or your policy needs it, the smart lock is paired with a compliant mechanical lock. Full options on the smart lock installation page.

Yes. Bi-folds: multipoint + shootbolt systems matched by fold configuration. Stable doors: upper and lower locking made to work together properly. Fire doors: fire-rated cylinders, handles and mortice locks only, so the door’s certification is preserved — essential for HMOs and communal areas.

Yes — offices, retail, cafés, restaurants, dealerships and industrial units, at the same rate as residential with no commercial surcharge. Adams Rite, patch fittings, restricted keyways, high-security suites and access-control cylinders all covered; out-of-hours attendance where it avoids disrupting trade.

Yes. Frameless and minimal-frame glass doors use patch-fitting locks or Adams Rite deadlatches — specialist parts many general locksmiths don’t carry. Max attends commercial glass-door callouts across Nottingham city centre and Derby, typically same day (see the Starbucks and Tesla jobs above).

A restricted keyway uses a key profile that can’t be cut at a standard key shop without your authorisation — so a departed employee or former tenant can’t quietly make copies. Worth it after staff changes and for any premises where key control matters.

Call 101 (999 if the intruder may still be there) and get a crime reference number; don’t disturb the scene until police have attended. Then call Max — he responds 24/7, secures the property, identifies every entry point, replaces compromised locks — anti-snap options on the van — and provides a written report for your insurer if needed. Boarding and full make-safe: after-burglary service.
