Max replaces and repairs all lock types across Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield and surrounding areas — cylinders, mortice deadlocks, night latches, multipoint mechanisms and commercial locks. Parts for every major brand in the van. Most replacements completed on the first visit — no call-out fee, no surcharge for evenings or weekends.
The Right Lock For Your Door — Fitted & Certified
Moved house, had a break-in, or locks worn out? Max replaces and upgrades euro cylinders, mortice locks, multipoint mechanisms and nightlatches — to the grade your door (and your insurer) needs.
The Kitemark star rating. A 1★ cylinder on its own isn't enough — you need 3★ (a 1★ cylinder plus a 2★ handle, or a 3★ cylinder) for real anti-snap protection on uPVC & composite doors.
An independent anti-snap test — the toughest euro-cylinder grade you can fit.
The British Standard insurers require on wooden final-exit doors (5-lever mortice).
Max The Locksmith is a Nottingham-based independent locksmith — not a call centre or franchise. When you call, you speak directly to Max. He covers Nottingham (NG1–NG16), Derby, Mansfield and surrounding areas, carrying stock for the most common lock types on every job. Most faults are diagnosed over the phone — though in some cases Max may need to attend and assess the lock up close before confirming the exact replacement and cost.
Lock Replacement Specialists For Every Door Type
Most People Only Upgrade After a Break-In. You Don’t Have To.
At almost every break-in Max attends across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield, the conversation ends the same way: the customer asks for the best, most secure lock available. It’s the right call — it just happens to come after the event.
Standard locks are vulnerable
A standard Euro cylinder protruding 3mm+ from the face plate can be snapped in 15–20 seconds using tools available from any hardware shop. Millions of UK homes still have these fitted — including on doors fitted as recently as 2015.
A burglary costs far more than a lock upgrade
The average residential burglary in the UK results in over £3,000 in losses — plus the disruption, the insurance claim, the elevated premium for years after. An anti-snap cylinder upgrade costs under £120. The maths is straightforward.
The upgrade takes under 15 minutes
A cylinder upgrade is one of the quickest security improvements Max carries out. No drilling, no damage to the door. Max attends, confirms the correct specification, fits the new lock, tests it with the new keys and is done. Most take 15 minutes per door.
Insurers increasingly require it
Many home insurance policies now include specific lock requirements as a condition of cover. Without the right lock, a claim after a break-in could be affected — even if the door was locked. Max confirms compliance on site.
Max’s most common post-burglary observation
“Every break-in I attend, the customer wants the best lock I have. That’s the right instinct — it’s just a shame it takes a burglary to get there. The locks that would have prevented it cost less than the excess on the insurance claim.” — Max

Official GuidanceWhat Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Police Recommend (uPVC & Composite Doors)
Both Nottinghamshire Police and Derbyshire Constabulary publish specific guidance on residential burglary prevention. Their key lock recommendations:
- TS007 3-star anti-snap Euro cylinders on all uPVC and composite doors
- BS3621 British Standard mortice deadlocks on all external timber doors
- Key-operated locks on accessible ground-floor windows
- Door chains or viewers on front doors
- Security lighting with motion sensors front and rear
- Never leave spare keys under mats, flowerpots or near letterboxes
Lock snapping: A standard Euro cylinder protruding 3mm+ from the face plate can be snapped in 15–20 seconds using tools available from any hardware shop. Lock snapping is the most common forced-entry method on uPVC and composite doors across both Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
Check Your Cylinder in 10 Seconds
Cylinder protruding 3mm+ from face plate
Can be snapped in 15–20 seconds with basic tools. The most common break-in method across Nottinghamshire. Upgrade immediately.
Flush cylinder — but no anti-snap rating
Still vulnerable — a determined burglar can force entry in approximately 30 seconds. Not compliant with police guidance or most insurer requirements.
TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder
Meets police guidance and most insurer requirements. Breaks safely at a sacrificial point if forced — door remains locked.
Fitted in under 15 minutes per door. No call-out fee.
Official GuidanceMortice Locks — Insurance-Grade vs Standard (Mostly Wooden Doors)
Many home insurance policies may require a BS3621-certified 5-lever mortice deadlock on external timber doors. Without one, a burglary claim could potentially be affected — even if the door was locked at the time.
✓ BS3621 Certified — Insurance-Grade
- “BS3621” stamped on the lock case or faceplate
- 5-lever mechanism (not 2- or 3-lever)
- Anti-saw bolt — hardened steel roller in the bolt
- Minimum 1,000 key differs
- Shoot bolt deadlocks when key is turned twice
- Requires key to open from both sides — no internal knob
✗ Non-Insurance Locks — Common Failures
- 2- or 3-lever locks — easily picked or forced
- No BS3621 stamp on case or faceplate
- Interior knob/turn that opens without a key
- Bolt doesn’t fully deadlock — can be pushed back
- Old or corroded mechanisms — bolt stiff or drops
Is Your Timber Door Insurance-Compliant?
Step 1 — Count the levers
Open the door and look for a number on the lock case. “5 Lever” or “5L” is a good start. If you can’t see it, assume it’s not BS3621.
Step 2 — Look for the BS3621 kitemark
A genuine BS3621 lock has the kitemark stamped on the faceplate or case. No stamp means it’s not insurance-approved, regardless of the number of levers.
Step 3 — Test the bolt
Turn the key twice. A BS3621 bolt must not be pushable back by hand when locked. If it moves, it’s not compliant.

Lock Replacement & Repair — Every Question Answered
Can’t find your question? Call Max on 07552 421 433 — most situations are diagnosed and quoted over the phone in minutes.
Costs & Pricing
How much does a lock replacement cost?
Lock replacements start from £85 plus parts. Parts range from £15 to £120+ depending on the lock type and security rating. A standard Euro cylinder replacement is typically at the lower end. A BS3621 mortice deadlock fitting, or a high-security cylinder with restricted keyway, will be higher. An exact quote including parts is always confirmed over the phone before attending. No call-out fee, no surcharge for evenings or weekends.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
No. There is no call-out fee across Nottingham (NG1–NG16), Derby, Mansfield and covered surrounding areas. The price agreed over the phone is the price for the completed job — no additional charge for attending and no premium for same-day, evening or weekend callouts.
Do I get a quote before you attend?
Yes, always. Max will ask about the door type, the lock type if known, and the reason for the replacement. From that he gives an indicative cost range over the phone. The exact quote — including the cost of parts — is confirmed before any work starts. No surprises.
Cylinders & Anti-Snap
What is a TS007 anti-snap cylinder and do I need one?
A TS007 3-star anti-snap Euro cylinder has a built-in sacrificial snap point. If a burglar attempts to snap it — the most common forced-entry method on uPVC and composite doors — the cylinder breaks at that engineered point while the internal cam remains intact and the door stays locked. Standard Euro cylinders protruding 3mm+ from the face plate can be snapped in under 20 seconds. Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Police both recommend TS007 cylinders on all uPVC and composite doors. If your door has a standard cylinder, upgrading is the single highest-return security improvement available.
How do I know if my cylinder is vulnerable to snapping?
Stand outside your closed door and look at the cylinder. If any part of it protrudes beyond the face of the door — even just 2–3mm — it can be snapped. Also check whether it has any anti-snap markings (TS007, 3-star, or a BSI kitemark). If you’re unsure, send Max a photo on WhatsApp and he’ll tell you within minutes.
Which anti-snap cylinder brands do you fit?
Apecs, Ultion, ABS Avocet, Yale Platinum, ERA Fortress, Brisant Secure, Ingenious and others depending on the specification needed. All TS007 3-star rated. Max will advise on the right brand for your door type and security requirements over the phone.
Can you key multiple locks alike so I only need one key?
Yes. Keying alike means fitting cylinders cut to the same key profile — so your front and back door, or multiple entry points, all open with one key. Works for both residential and commercial properties. Discussed and quoted at the time of booking.
What is lockdown mode on a high-security cylinder?
Some high-security cylinders — including certain Apecs, Ultion and ABS models — include a lockdown function. When engaged from inside, the cylinder cannot be turned from the outside — even with the correct key. Useful for overnight security or high-value properties. Max can advise on whether your door is compatible during the phone consultation.
Mortice Locks & Wooden Doors
What is a BS3621 mortice lock and do I need one?
BS3621 is the British Standard for security mortice deadlocks fitted to external timber doors. It requires a minimum of 5 levers, 1,000 key differs, a hardened steel anti-saw bolt, and a bolt that cannot be pushed back without a key. Many home insurance policies may require a BS3621 lock on external timber doors as a condition of cover. If your timber door has a 2- or 3-lever lock, or a lock with no BS3621 stamp on the case, it is likely not insurance-compliant. Max fits and certifies BS3621 locks across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield, same-day available.
How do I check if my mortice lock is BS3621?
Open the door and look at the body of the lock. A genuine BS3621 lock will have “BS3621” or the BSI kitemark stamped on the faceplate or case. Count the levers — it should say “5 Lever” or “5L”. Finally, turn the key twice and try to push the bolt back by hand — a BS3621 bolt will not move. If any of these checks fail, the lock is not compliant. Call Max and he’ll advise on the right replacement.
Can you replace an old rim lock on a Victorian or period door?
Yes. Old rim locks — common on Victorian and Edwardian front doors across Nottingham’s NG3–NG7 belt — can be replaced with a modern BS3621 mortice deadlock or a deadlocking night latch without damaging the door or its period furniture. Max takes particular care with period properties to preserve the door’s aesthetics. Both the new lock and any period handles are confirmed complementary before fitting.
What is a sash lock?
A sash lock combines a deadbolt and a latch in a single unit. The latch allows the door to close automatically without a key; the deadbolt locks it fully when the key is turned. Common on timber front and back doors. BS3621-certified sash locks are available and provide insurance compliance for both the latch and deadbolt functions in a single fitting.
Multipoint Mechanisms & uPVC / Composite Doors
My uPVC or composite door won't lock — is it the cylinder or the mechanism?
The simplest way to tell: if the handle lifts and the locking points engage but the key won’t turn, it’s the cylinder. If the handle doesn’t lift smoothly, or the locking points don’t all engage, it’s likely the multipoint mechanism. Max diagnoses this over the phone in most cases — though for unusual faults he may need to attend and assess up close before confirming.
Can you replace just the cylinder without replacing the whole lock?
In most cases yes — for uPVC and composite doors with Euro cylinders, the cylinder can be swapped independently of the mechanism. For timber doors with mortice locks, the lock body and cylinder are separate components and can usually be addressed individually. Max will confirm which approach applies to your door during the initial phone call.
Which multipoint mechanism brands do you carry?
GU, Mila, Fullex, ERA, Avocet, Winkhaus, Fuhr, Roto, Yale, Nico and AGB are the most common. Max identifies the existing mechanism by backset, case measurement and hook configuration, then sources the correct replacement. Most are replaced on the first visit.
Tenancy Changes & Landlords
How quickly can you do a tenancy lock change?
A standard Euro cylinder tenancy change — the most common type — takes around 15 minutes per door. Max works with landlords and letting agents across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield for fast tenancy changes that minimise void periods. Multiple doors can be changed in a single visit and keyed alike if required.
Is it a legal requirement to change locks between tenancies?
There is no specific statutory requirement, but it is strongly recommended as best practice and is increasingly required by letting agents and property management companies. If a previous tenant retains a key copy, there is no way to know without a lock change. Most landlords consider it standard procedure — the cost is low relative to the risk.
Do you work with letting agents and property management companies?
Yes. Max works with letting agents and property managers across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield for tenancy lock changes, security upgrades and emergency callouts. Fast turnaround is prioritised to minimise void periods. Contact Max →
Commercial Locks
Do you replace commercial locks?
Yes. Commercial lock replacement and repair is carried out at the same rate as residential — no commercial surcharge. Max covers offices, retail premises, cafes, restaurants, car dealerships and industrial units across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield. Adams Rite, patch fitting, restricted keyway, high-security commercial and access control cylinders all covered.
Can you replace a lock on a glass shopfront door?
Yes. Frameless and minimal-frame glass shopfront doors use specialist patch fitting locks or Adams Rite deadlatches. These require specific knowledge and parts that many general locksmiths won’t carry. Max attends commercial glass door callouts across Nottingham city centre and Derby, typically same day.
What is a restricted keyway cylinder?
A restricted keyway cylinder uses a key profile that cannot be cut at a standard key-cutting shop without the owner’s authorisation. This means that even if an employee or former tenant has a key, they cannot get copies made without your knowledge. Particularly useful after a staff change. Max fits restricted keyway systems for commercial and residential clients.
After a Break-In
What should I do immediately after a break-in?
Call 101 (or 999 if the intruder may still be on the premises) and obtain a crime reference number. Do not disturb the scene until police have attended. Then call Max — he responds 24/7 to post-burglary callouts across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield. He will secure the property, identify all entry points, replace compromised locks with TS007 anti-snap cylinders as standard, and provide a written report if required by your insurer.
Will you fit the best lock after a break-in?
Yes — and you won’t need a burglary to get it. Max carries TS007 anti-snap, high-security and BS3621-certified locks on every job. The locks fitted after break-ins are available as standard upgrades at any time — same price, same visit. Most customers who upgrade after a burglary say they wish they’d done it sooner. You don’t have to wait.
Door Types
Do you replace locks on bi-fold doors?
Yes. Bi-fold doors use multipoint locking systems and Euro cylinders — Max replaces both. The mechanism is identified by brand and fold configuration, then replaced with a compatible unit. Anti-snap cylinder upgrades are available for bi-fold doors as standard.
Do you replace locks on stable doors?
Yes. Stable doors have separate upper and lower locking systems. Max replaces the locks on both halves — night latch or cylinder on the upper, mortice or euro cylinder on the lower — and ensures both operate correctly together.
Do you replace locks on fire doors?
Yes, but fire door lock replacements must use fire-rated hardware to maintain the door’s certification. Max fits fire-rated cylinders, handles and mortice locks that comply with the door’s original specification. This is particularly relevant for HMOs, commercial premises and communal areas in apartment buildings.
