Why window handles jam locked

1. The espag mechanism has seized

The most common cause. The espagnolette — the locking strip the handle drives — corrodes or dries out inside the sash. The handle isn’t the problem; it’s the messenger. Freeing and lubricating the strip (or replacing a failed one) cures it; more on how these work in our espag window lock guide.

2. The handle’s own lock button is stuck

Key-locking handles have a tiny cylinder that seizes if it’s never used. Sometimes it frees with the key and proper lubricant; often the handle is simply replaced — they’re inexpensive, as our window handle replacement guide covers.

3. A snapped spindle

The handle turns a square steel spindle; when it shears, the handle moves but nothing happens — or jams solid mid-turn. Replacement handle, minutes to fit, window working again.

4. The sash has dropped onto its locking points

Worn friction hinges let the sash sag, pinning the espag rollers in their keeps under load. The handle jams because the whole window is hanging on the lock. Hinge replacement releases it — and stops the next jam.
