First: which kind of “won’t open” is it?

The right move depends on the symptom, so check these before forcing anything:

1. The handle moves but the door stays shut

The gearbox follower has failed — the handle is no longer connected to the locking points. Common on doors that have felt “floppy” for a few weeks. This needs the mechanism released from the inside of the lock case; forcing the door bends the strip and turns a £-part repair into a bigger one.

2. The key turns partway then stops

Either the cylinder is failing or the deadbolt is jammed under load. If the door has dropped, the bolts bind in their keeps — lifting or pushing the door while turning the key sometimes releases it. If the key suddenly turns with no resistance at all, the cam has snapped: stop, and call.

3. The key won’t turn at all

A seized or snapped cylinder. Never force it — a snapped key doubles the job. Cylinders are replaced in minutes once the door is open, with anti-snap fitted as standard.

4. Door opens an inch then catches

Usually a dropped hinge or a failed roller catching the keep — an alignment problem, and the cheapest fix on this page.

5. Deadlocked shut and nothing moves

Full mechanism failure, usually after weeks of a stiff handle. This is the classic emergency call — and still opens non-destructively in most cases, using the same techniques we use on jammed composite doors.

Don’t shoulder it, don’t lever the corner with a screwdriver, and don’t keep cranking the handle — the mechanism is already failing, and force finishes it off. Every bit of damage adds parts to the bill. A locksmith’s whole skill is opening the door without any of that.
