Most Lock Problems Are Not Lock Problems

Before you replace anything, it helps to know how a locksmith actually works out what is wrong.

Two questions that help point to the cause of most door faults

1. Does it happen with the door open, or only when it is shut? If it only plays up when closed, the door has often dropped and the locking points are catching the frame — which points towards alignment rather than a broken lock.

2. Does the key still turn and the latch still move? If the key turns fine but the door still will not open, it is usually the mechanism inside the door or the handle — though in rarer cases the cylinder itself can still be the cause.

These are a starting point, not a final diagnosis. Sometimes what looks like a simple alignment issue turns out to be a worn mechanism, and the only way to know for sure is to get eyes on it. Either way, we tell you straight what it needs — and what it does not.

uPVC Doors

uPVC Door Faults

uPVC door won’t lock

The door has usually dropped so the hooks miss the keeps, or the mechanism has worn. Often an adjustment, sometimes a new mechanism.

Door lock repair →

Handle won’t lift up to lock

Won’t lift with the door open? It is the handle or the mechanism. Only when it is shut? The door has dropped and the hooks are catching.

Door lock repair →

Door dropped or catching on the frame

The slab has sunk on its hinges and rubs the frame or will not latch. A hinge and keep adjustment brings it back into line.

Door repair →

Euro cylinder snapped

A standard cylinder snaps at the centre, sometimes during a break-in attempt. We fit BSI Kitemark anti-snap cylinders — 1 Star or 3 Star — one of the biggest security upgrades you can make.

Lock replacement →

Key won’t turn in the lock

A worn cylinder, a failed cam, or a tired key. We work out which and usually fix it without damaging the door.

Door lock repair →

uPVC door won’t open

The hooks or latch are not retracting, usually a failed mechanism. Do not force it; we open these non-destructively.

Locked out →
Composite Doors

Composite Door Faults

Composite door dropped or sticking

The slab is heavier than uPVC so the flag hinges wear faster. A hinge adjustment restores easy locking.

Door repair →

Composite door won’t lock

Same locking hardware as uPVC, so it is usually alignment or a worn mechanism. We diagnose and put it right.

Door lock repair →

Sticks in summer, fine in winter

Composite doors shift slightly with temperature. A seasonal hinge adjustment keeps it locking smoothly year-round.

Door repair →

Handle loose or floppy

A floppy handle with the door open is a worn spring inside the handle; loose when shut is usually fixings or a worn spindle.

Door repair →
Patio, Sliding & Bifold

Patio, Sliding & Bifold Door Faults

Patio door won’t lock

The hook bolts are not engaging the keeps: a worn lock, a dropped door, or a failed handle. We replace the lock and realign.

Door lock repair →

Sliding door hard to slide or off track

Worn rollers or a damaged track. We replace the rollers, clean up the track and re-level the panel.

Door repair →

Bifold won’t lock or align

As the panels sag the shootbolts drop out of line. We realign the panels and adjust the locking points.

Door repair →

Heavy or custom sliding doors

Big, wide units that need a full strip-down and rebuild, the kind of job that takes more than one pair of hands. We do these.

Door repair →
Wooden & Timber Doors

Wooden & Timber Door Faults

Mortice lock won’t turn

Worn levers, internal debris or a tired key. We service it or fit a BS3621 mortice lock, the insurer standard for timber doors.

Lock replacement →

Night latch or Yale lock failure

A worn latch, a broken spring or a misaligned keep. We replace the night latch and realign the staple.

Lock replacement →

Timber door swollen or sticking

Real timber absorbs moisture and expands. We ease and adjust the door and hardware so it closes and locks again.

Door repair →

Key snapped in a mortice lock

We extract the broken key non-destructively and cut a replacement or fit a new lock the same visit.

Locks, Cylinders & Security

Lock, Cylinder & Security Faults

Worried about lock snapping

Standard euro cylinders snap under leverage. A BSI Kitemark anti-snap cylinder (1 Star or 3 Star) is the single best upgrade against forced entry.

Security check →

Key stuck in the lock

Usually a worn cylinder cam or a tired key. Do not force it, that is how keys snap. We remove it non-destructively and replace the cylinder if needed.

Locked out →

Multipoint mechanism failed

The strip of hooks and bolts down the door edge has worn or seized. We identify the exact mechanism and replace it.

Door lock repair →

Want your locks more secure

Anti-snap, anti-bump and anti-pick cylinders to British Standard. We check what you have and upgrade the weak points.

Additional security →
Windows

Window Faults

Window won’t lock or handle won’t turn

The espagnolette mechanism or handle has failed, or the sash has dropped so the cams miss the keeps. We replace and realign.

Window repairs →

Window won’t stay open

The friction stays (the hinges) are worn out. Replacing them restores the hold and lets the window lock properly again.

Window repairs →

Window handle broken or snapped

We replace the handle and spindle, matched to your lock type, so it operates smoothly again.

FAQs

Door & Lock Fault Questions

The questions we get asked most when something stops working.

Why won’t my uPVC door lock?
Most often the door has dropped so the locking hooks miss the keeps in the frame, or the mechanism has worn. Caught early it is usually an adjustment; left longer the mechanism may need replacing.
Why won’t my door handle lift up to lock?
If it will not lift with the door open, the fault is in the handle or the mechanism. If it only fails when the door is shut, the door has dropped and the hooks are catching the frame, which is usually a hinge adjustment.
My uPVC door won’t open even though it is unlocked — what is wrong?
The hooks or latch are not retracting, usually because the mechanism has failed. Do not force it, as that can jam it harder and damage the door. We open these non-destructively and replace the mechanism.
Why has my euro cylinder snapped?
Standard euro cylinders snap at the centre under leverage, and it is a known break-in method. Replacing it with a BSI Kitemark anti-snap cylinder (1 Star or 3 Star) is one of the biggest security upgrades for a uPVC or composite door.
My key won’t turn — is it the lock or the key?
Either a worn cylinder or mechanism, or a worn key. We diagnose which and usually fix it without damaging the door.
Why is my key stuck in the lock?
Usually a worn cylinder cam or a tired key. Do not force or twist it hard, as that is how keys snap. We remove it non-destructively and replace the cylinder if needed.
My key snapped off in the door — what now?
We extract the broken key non-destructively and either cut a replacement or fit a new cylinder the same visit.
Why does my uPVC door get stiff to lock in hot or cold weather?
Doors and frames expand in heat and contract in cold, which shifts the alignment with the seasons. It is usually a hinge or keep adjustment rather than a new mechanism.
Why is my door handle floppy or loose?
A floppy handle when the door is open is a worn spring inside the handle. Loose when the door is shut is usually loose fixings or a worn spindle. Both are quick repairs.
Why won’t my patio or sliding door lock?
The hook bolts are not engaging the keeps, often because the door has dropped on worn rollers or the lock has failed. We replace the lock, adjust the rollers and realign.
Why won’t my window handle turn to lock?
The espagnolette mechanism or handle has failed, or the sash has dropped so the cams miss the keeps. We replace the mechanism or handle and realign the sash.
What is the most secure lock for my door?
For uPVC and composite doors, a BSI Kitemark anti-snap euro cylinder (1 Star or 3 Star). For timber doors, a BS3621 5-lever mortice lock, the standard most insurers ask for.
Can you get me in without breaking the door?
Yes. Non-destructive entry is our default. We only ever drill as a last resort, and we replace like-for-like if a lock has to be changed.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
No call-out fee. We are a real local Nottingham locksmith and you can reach Max direct on 07552 421433.
