Lock Types

Locks Max Installs — Every Door Type

The right lock depends on the door. Max advises before any work starts.

TS007 Euro Cylinder — uPVC & Composite

The standard lock for uPVC and composite doors. TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinders fitted as standard — not basic cylinders. Most door sizes carried on the van. 15–20 minutes to fit. New keys included.

BS3621 Mortice Deadlock — Timber Doors

The insurance standard for timber front and back doors. 5-lever British Standard mortice deadlock. Required by many household insurers on final-exit timber doors. Max advises on the right case size for your door.

Multipoint Lock — uPVC & Composite

Complete multipoint locking system installation or replacement. Multiple locking points secured simultaneously from a single handle. For new doors or mechanism replacement on existing uPVC and composite doors.

Night Latch — Rim Lock

Yale-style rim lock installation or upgrade. Common on older Nottingham terraced properties. BS3621 rated night latches available for insurance compliance. Deadlocking night latches recommended.

Key Safe Installation

Secure key safe installation for carers, family access or emergency services. Position is critical — Max advises on the right location and model for your property and installs to manufacturer specification.

Additional Locks — Windows & Gates

Window locks, gate padlocks, garage locks and outbuilding security. Max advises on the right product for each application. All fitted to manufacturer specification with appropriate fixings.

Common Reasons

When to Get Locks Installed or Changed

Moved into a new home

Previous key holders unknown. A cylinder change takes 15 minutes and gives you full control. Recommended on the day of moving in.

Tenancy changeover

Landlord responsibility to ensure new tenants have exclusive key access. Cylinder change between each tenancy is best practice and can be done by appointment.

Insurance requirement

Insurer requiring BS3621 or TS007 rated locks. Max advises on the exact specification required for your door type and insurer.

After a break-in or near miss

Existing locks compromised or known to be vulnerable. Immediate upgrade to TS007 anti-snap cylinders removes the most common attack method.

Old or worn locks

Locks that are stiff, unreliable or have been in place for many years. Old locks provide less security and are more likely to fail. Replacement is usually straightforward.

Relationship change

Separated from a partner, former lodger moved out, lost key never returned. A cylinder change gives you full control of access in 15 minutes.

PRICING — CONFIRMED BEFORE MAX SETS OFF

Lock Installation Pricing

No call-out fee. You get the price over the phone before Max attends — and it’s the same price whether it’s an emergency or an appointment: the majority of jobs are £85 + parts (+ VAT — stated upfront here, not discovered on the invoice). No weekend rates; overnight call-outs (10pm–6am) are a flat from £95 + VAT.

Trusted brands only — cheap unbranded units are a security risk, not a saving

One visit, one honest price — not per lock, not per door. A straightforward job is £85 + parts (+ VAT), full stop — even an awkward one, like a door deadlocked shut with a failed multipoint mechanism that has to be opened, stripped and rebuilt. Spot a second, similar problem while Max is there? Sorting it in the same visit typically adds around £45 + VAT in labour — and often nothing at all; many multi-item visits stay at £85 flat + parts. Genuinely complex, time-consuming work is the only exception, and even then you shouldn’t expect big swings — everything is discussed and agreed before any work starts. The one genuine exception is work that needs more than one pair of hands — large unit disassembly and reassembly that simply can’t be done safely solo. Alongside Max there’s his own small team — Dave, Ian and Alex — for exactly that kind of job — where others say no, the team takes it on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lock Installation — Questions Answered

Choosing the Right Lock

What type of lock do I need for my front door?

It depends on the door. For uPVC and composite doors: a TS007 3-star anti-snap euro cylinder is the recommended standard — Max fits these as default. For timber doors: a BS3621 5-lever mortice deadlock is the insurance standard. Max advises on the right lock for your specific door type, age and insurer requirements before any work starts.

What is the difference between a TS007 and a standard cylinder?

A standard euro cylinder can be snapped in under 20 seconds using tools from any hardware shop. A TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder is engineered to resist this attack — the cylinder sacrifices at a designed break point before the mechanism is reached. The key operation is identical. The security difference is significant.

My insurer requires a 5-lever mortice lock — what does this mean?

A 5-lever mortice lock fits into the door body (mortice) and has 5 levers inside the lock body. BS3621 is the British Standard rating for mortice locks. Most insurers refer to BS3621 on timber doors. Max can advise on the specific case size and specification for your door.

Can you advise on the best lock before I commit?

Yes. Max discusses the door type, age, existing hardware and any insurer requirements over the phone before attending. The right lock is agreed before any work starts.

New Home & Tenancy Changeover

I’ve just moved into a new home — should I change the locks?

Yes, immediately. You have no way of knowing how many copies of the previous keys exist or who holds them — previous owners, estate agents, builders, tradespeople. A cylinder change takes 15 minutes per door and costs from £85. Max can attend the same day across Nottingham, Derby and Mansfield.

I’m a landlord — should I change locks between tenancies?

Yes. It is best practice to change cylinders between each tenancy to ensure new tenants have exclusive access and previous tenants cannot re-enter. This is not currently a legal requirement in England, but many landlords do it as standard. Max can attend by appointment and complete all doors in a single visit.

Can you change the locks on multiple doors in one visit?

Yes. Max carries multiple cylinders and lock types on every visit. A 3-door property can typically be re-keyed in under an hour. All new keys are supplied.

Pricing & Process

How much does lock installation cost?

Lock installation starts from £85 plus parts. Parts typically range from £15 to £120 depending on the lock type. Euro cylinder replacement is typically at the lower end. A BS3621 mortice installation is at the higher end. An accurate quote is always confirmed before Max attends.

How long does lock installation take?

Euro cylinder replacement: 15–20 minutes per door. Night latch installation: 20–30 minutes. Mortice deadlock installation: 30–60 minutes depending on whether a new pocket needs to be cut. Most jobs are completed in a single visit.

Do I need to do anything to prepare?

Just confirm your door type if you can — uPVC, composite or timber. For cylinder replacement, measuring the existing cylinder size is helpful but not essential. Max measures on arrival if needed.

Will my new lock come with a warranty?

Yes. All locks fitted by Max carry a 12-month warranty on parts and labour. Locks from Apecs, Yale, Ultion and ERA also carry manufacturer warranties.

Can I supply my own lock and have you fit it?

Yes — fitting-only visits run at the same £85 labour. Max will tell you honestly before it goes in if the lock you bought is a weak one (plenty on the high street are), and the fitting itself is guaranteed for 12 months — the lock carries its maker’s warranty.

Do you install locks on uPVC and composite doors, or just timber?

All of them — euro cylinders, multipoint gearboxes and handles on uPVC and composite, mortice deadlocks and nightlatches on timber, and specialist cylinders on aluminium shopfronts. One visit covers a mixed house: front composite, back uPVC, timber side gate.

Can you fit locks keyed alike, so one key opens everything?

Yes — cylinders across the house can be keyed alike the same visit, front, back and garage on a single key. It costs little more than the cylinders themselves and ends the fat-keyring problem for good.

Do you install window locks and restrictors as well?

Yes — key-locking window handles, sash jammers and opening restrictors are usually fitted in the same visit as door work. If a window mechanism is already failing, see the window repairs page — repair is often cheaper than you expect.

Can you fit a smart lock instead of a traditional one?

Yes — Max fits trusted smart brands only at £120 + lock + VAT, configured and tested before he leaves. Cheap unbranded units are a security risk, not a saving; the smart lock installation page covers what’s worth fitting for homes, Airbnb and HMOs.

Do you install locks in Derby, Mansfield and Loughborough?

Yes — all four towns are covered on the same £85 + lock rate with no travel charge, same-day where the diary allows. Multi-property landlords across two towns are handled in one planned run.

Do you cover the villages between the main towns?

Every one of them — Hucknall, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Beeston, Arnold, Bingham, Ruddington and dozens more sit inside the patch, at the same rate with no travel charge. The full list is on the areas we cover page — if you are between Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield and Loughborough, you are covered.
